Summary The LVT is responsible for daily care of all surgical patients, working with the DVM and veterinary assistants to provide medical care to shelter and publicly owned animals, general cleaning, client communication and training others to utilize our patient care protocols. Working Relationship Works closely with the Veterinarian, Clinic Manager, Veterinary Assistants, Volunteers and other staff. Essential Functions Responsibly prepare, administer, and log controlled substances Efficiently premedicate, induce and intubate patients as necessary. Obtain accurate vital signs and monitor anesthesia; with a clear understanding of abnormal conditions and appropriate response Administer medications via SQ, IM, and IV injection. Able to respond appropriately during an emergency, able to take directions from Veterinarian and direct others during the event, and maintain competency during CPR procedures. Able to glove in sterilely and assist doctor with surgery as needed Able to effectively triage patients upon arrival Ability to intake and release surgical patients, including delivering post-operative instructions in a competent and friendly manner. Obtain any pertinent medical history regarding each patient in a thorough manner. Proficiency with Google Suite, PetPoint, and Microsoft Office; or ability to learn. Ensure prompt and accurate paperwork procedures are followed each day. Communicate in an effective and professional manner with the public, volunteers, and all WVHS staff members. Represent WVHS in a professional and courteous manner at all times. Follow all written and verbally communicated departmental standard operating procedures. Communicate with clients and assist with foster checks as needed. Train veterinary assistants, and volunteers to utilize our patient care protocols. Ability to perform various tasks when instructed such as placing intravenous catheters, performing centesis, and analyzing fecal samples. Handle medical calls. All other duties, as assigned by the supervisor. Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Licensed Veterinary Technician in good standing in Washington State.If you do not already hold a WA LVT license, WVHS encourages you to obtain this license within 3 months of your start date. Fluent in English; Spanish speaking skills preferred. Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to rapidly and accurately process information. Client Communication Must be able to learn basic veterinary medical concepts, including but not limited to vaccine protocols and anesthetic risks. Must also be able to communicate basic veterinary concepts to owners and be able to repeat information relayed by a Veterinarian. Will be asked to take medical histories for surgical rechecks and foster appointments Will be asked to communicate with the public in a professional manner in person and over the phone. Animal Handling Demonstrate low stress animal handling techniques Will be asked to handle (on average) 20-30 dogs, cats and small mammals per day. Must be able to learn characteristics of animal behavior (for example: be able to identify aggressive or fearful behavior.) Must be able to use appropriate safety equipment for fractious or feral animals (will train) - the use of safety equipment is mandatory. Should be able to identify your own limitations and be willing to ask for help. Must become proficient at animal restraint for various procedures. Physical Requirements Must be able to work standing or sitting for 8 or more hours. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the day with help. Must be able to bend and kneel repeatedly. Must have good hearing. Must have good range of motion in joints especially wrists, knees, elbows. Must have a good range of motion in your back for twisting, etc. Must have an acceptable sense of balance. Must be able to work and reach on hands and knees. Must be able to use a ladder and or step stool. Must possess excellent hand-eye coordination. Must possess an acceptable degree of dexterity in hands and fingers. Must have good vision. Emotional and Mental Requirements Must be able to work under stressful conditions and work efficiently and effectively under those conditions. Must support the mission and goals of shelter medicine. Must be able to respond quickly to a variety of medical situations (with training). Must be able to cope with death due to surgical complications or euthanasia. Ability to rapidly and accurately process information. Ability to delegate tasks. Ability to recognize a need for assistance and ask for help. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to make decisions. Ability to cope with frustrating situations and remain calm. Potential and Prolonged Exposures Prolonged exposure to various aqueous solutions, including but not limited to, dish soap, chlorhexidine, and spectra soap. Prolonged exposure to isopropanol, hydrogen peroxide. Potential exposure to formalin solution. Potential exposure to isoflurane gas. Potential exposure to X-Ray radiation. Prolonged exposure to quaternary ammonium cleaners and bleach. Prolonged exposure to pressurized steam. Potential exposure to sharps including needles and surgical blades. Preferences 1 or more years of experience in a veterinary clinic, veterinary hospital, and or animal shelter or control facility. Candidate should be highly motivated, enthusiastic self-starter with a professional attitude. Other Requirements Must pass a Washington State Patrol Background Check, no convictions, guilty pleas, or no contest pleas that are associated with controlled or illegal substances, or any criminal law pertaining to animals. Must pass a drug screening Working Conditions The offices and operations of a high volume spay/neuter clinic can be high stress and very busy at times. This position is part or full time with weekend and occasional evening work. This can include working some holidays and overtime depending on clinic needs. Candidates must be flexible with schedule changes and short notice overtime requests.
